PROJECT DESCRIPTION
SUCCESSFUL ASPECTS
NMSU’s natatorium, which was originally constructed in the 1960’s, lacked a gender neutral restroom space. The existing lobby forced visitors to travel through either the men’s or women’s locker room to reach the pool areas. The check-in area of the Natatorium was altered to allow passage for visitors; this provided equal access for all visitors and allowed them to choose which restroom or locker room they would like to use. New casework was provided within the revised check-in area which allowed for staff to monitor entry into the facility.
The existing (non-ada compliant) staff locker room and janitor’s closet adjacent to the check-in area was converted into the gender neutral restroom. The ADA compliant space provided a roll-in shower, lavatory, water closet, baby changing station and new light fixtures and finishes. The janitor’s equipment was re-located to the facility’s mechanical room.
The facility now includes an all inclusive entry that does not discriminate against visitors.
