Project Description:
The University’s Speech and Language Department sought to expand its services by establishing an additional branch of their Autism Clinic. To achieve this goal, Desert Peak Architects was commissioned to design a new clinic within an existing suite in O’Donnell Hall. The thoughtfully designed space includes a welcoming waiting room, a reception area, two diagnostic rooms, two observation rooms, staff offices, and a family restroom, all aimed at fostering a supportive and inviting atmosphere.
The selection of finishes throughout the clinic was carefully curated to create a calming environment, promoting comfort for both families and clients. Emphasizing the importance of sensory-friendly design, the palette and materials were chosen to enhance the overall experience for visitors.
Desert Peak Architects collaborated with CVI to integrate the Clinic Observation Recording System (CORS) infrastructure into the design. This involved accommodating essential equipment such as cameras, microphones, observation speakers, and talk-back transmitters, ensuring a seamless setup for clinical assessments and training. Access control features were also implemented to enhance security and privacy for clients.
During the design phase, the addition of a family restroom was identified as a crucial requirement, added late in the construction process. To ensure the facility could open on schedule, Desert Peak Architects worked closely with the contractor to expedite its construction. They provided multiple iterations of the restroom layout, balancing budgetary constraints with the logistics of fixture sizes and mounting heights, ultimately delivering a functional and accessible space without exceeding the available budget.
The successful completion of the Autism Clinic not only expands the university’s support services but also underscores the commitment to creating environments that are both functional and conducive to the well-being of its clients.
