Macarthur Elementary School Additions and Renovations
Design Start: Febuary 03, 2021
Construction Completion: October 13, 2023
Owner: Las Cruces Public Schools
Location: Las Cruces, New Mexico
Project Type: Commercial
Project Description:
This project involved the partial demolition of the existing school building’s administration area to create a new secure entry vestibule and upgraded administrative spaces. Approximately 1,800 square feet of the existing building was carefully demolished down to the concrete slab to facilitate this transformation. The existing administration and nurse rooms were also renovated to enhance functionality and safety.
A new roofing system was installed over the administration area, along with updated mechanical units and utilities to ensure optimal climate control and energy efficiency. The renovations to the nurse’s area included the addition of three sick beds, a countertop with a sink, a dedicated restroom, and a new nurse’s office. The design emphasized adequate storage and workspace, improving the overall functionality for staff and providing a welcoming environment for parents and visitors.
The new secure vestibule and waiting area were constructed to enhance safety for public use, incorporating advanced security systems to prevent unauthorized access to the school facility. This included the installation of comprehensive security measures, such as access control systems and panic buttons, to address local crime concerns.
Throughout the project, several challenges arose that required innovative solutions. The administrative staff needed to be relocated during construction, leading to the design of temporary rooms in the library equipped with surveillance cameras and automatic opening technology for ease of access. Once the renovations were completed, the staff was moved into their permanent spaces, and the temporary entrance camera was integrated into the new security system for enhanced safety.
Additionally, the project included owner-initiated changes during construction, which necessitated adjustments to the security access control systems. These modifications were carefully coordinated with the owner and contractor, ensuring that the final design met all safety requirements and provided a secure environment for students and staff.
This comprehensive renovation not only improves the security and functionality of the school’s administration area but also enhances the overall safety and comfort of the entire facility, creating a supportive environment for education and health services.
