Desert Peak Architects is a Southern New Mexico firm that is dedicated to providing professional services and quality architecture to our region and our community. As local and long-time residents of New Mexico, we take pride in and appreciate our community, our state and the overall beauty of the desert. Our vision for Las Cruces and the broader Region is to elevate the community through the development of vibrant, exceptional and well-crafted buildings.
Joseph Fuemmeler is the president of Desert Peak Architects and a visionary leader with a strong creative imagination. He brings a thoughtful, comprehensive approach to every project, carefully considering site, context, client goals, and budget. Known for his ability to identify challenges and craft innovative solutions, Joseph excels in exploring architectural form and finding inspiration in every project.
A native of New Mexico, Joseph recently settled in Las Cruces, where he has quickly become an active member of the community. His passion for design is matched by his enthusiasm and purpose in all his endeavors, striving to be both an advocate for his clients and the community. Joseph is a licensed architect in New Mexico and has built an extensive portfolio over 18 years, working in firms across Washington D.C., Austin, TX, Albuquerque, Tucson, and Las Cruces. His experience across diverse regions has provided him with a broad perspective and a deep understanding of how to create meaningful, impactful architecture. Joseph holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of New Mexico.
Ruben Contreras is a versatile Project Architect and Project Manager at Desert Peak Architects, known for his exceptional service, attention to detail, and commitment to client satisfaction. As a firm leader, Ruben is highly responsive and attentive to client goals, ensuring that every design meets their needs and exceeds expectations. In addition to his architectural expertise, Ruben oversees quality control for the firm, ensuring all deliverables are accurate, complete, and of the highest standard.
Ruben is a detail-oriented designer who draws inspiration from nature, striving to incorporate biophilic design principles into every project. His focus on creating healthy, sustainable environments is complemented by a strong commitment to energy efficiency. As a steward of the environment, he works to ensure that his designs not only enhance the well-being of their occupants but also contribute positively to the planet. Ruben’s educational background in design and fabrication, along with hands-on experience in metal and wood shop work, provides him with a unique understanding of how creative concepts can be effectively brought to life. With 8 years of experience, Ruben’s diverse skill set and commitment to quality make him an invaluable asset to the Desert Peak Architects team. Ruben holds a Master of Architecture from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of New Mexico.
Gabe Lucero is a dedicated advocate for clients, known for going above and beyond to ensure the best possible service and outcomes for every project at Desert Peak Architects. With 18 years of experience, Gabe has earned the trust and respect of both public and private clients through his unwavering commitment to representing their best interests, particularly during the construction phase.
As a native of Las Cruces, Gabe is deeply invested in the future of southern New Mexico and is proud to have served local public clients throughout the region. He specializes in K-12 public school facility design, having successfully completed over 20 projects for districts across southern New Mexico. Gabe also excels in public safety facility design, collaborating closely with user groups and municipalities to create functional, community-centered designs that meet the unique needs of first responders and the public they serve. Gabe holds a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture, both from Texas Tech University. His passion for creating healthy, sustainable spaces, combined with his local expertise, makes him an invaluable asset to the Desert Peak Architects team.
Sammy Lopez is an experienced architectural designer currently working towards obtaining his Architectural Licensure in Texas and New Mexico. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Texas Tech University and has been practicing since 2011. With over twelve years of experience, Sammy has developed a strong focus on sustainable and regenerative design principles, which he integrates into every project.
Throughout his career, Sammy has specialized in the hospitality and commercial sectors of architecture, having worked on more than 30 bars and restaurants across the West Texas region. His expertise extends to historic preservation, where he has contributed to the renovation, restoration, and rehabilitation of over a dozen historic buildings, collaborating with preservationists and local and state municipalities. Most recently, Sammy worked at HKS International in Dallas, where he gained valuable experience in high-rise multi-family architecture, further enhancing his skills in large-scale design and functional architecture. Sammy is now contributing his expertise to Desert Peak Architects in New Mexico, where he assists on a variety of projects aimed at enriching the local community through thoughtful, impactful design.
Nickthaniel “Nick” Wells is an emerging professional at Desert Peak Architects, bringing 1.5 years of experience to the team. Eager to expand his expertise in architectural detailing and construction, Nick has actively contributed to the development of architectural documents for a diverse range of projects, including municipal initiatives, housing developments, and multi- million-dollar renovation projects.
Nick is committed to continuous growth and learning, aiming to further his education and pursue a Master’s degree in architecture in the near future. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Texas Tech University, which he earned in May of 2023. With a strong foundation and a passion for the craft, Nick is poised to make a lasting impact in the field of architecture.

and Site Analysis
- Identification or verification of project specific spatial requirements
- On-site investigation and documentation of existing conditions
- Budget and schedule review and feasibility assessment

Schematic Design Services
and Opinion of Probable Cost
- Development of schematic design solutions to your design problem.
- Spatial relationships are represented through diagrams which are translated to Schematic Design drawings.
- An opinion of probable cost can be provided based on the Schematic Design drawings.
Design Development Services
and Updated Cost Estimate
Design Development involves the selection and inclusion of preliminary building systems within the Schematic Design. These systems typically include:
- Structural Systems
- Plumbing Systems
- Electrical Systems
- Mechanical Systems
- Fire Suppression Systems
- Architectural systems such as wall assemblies, ceiling assemblies, lighting layouts and openings.
Construction Documents
and Final Opinion of Probable Cost
- Construction Documents are drawing sets that include detailed instructions for construction. The Construction Documents are typically developed in collaboration with professional engineers which are hired by Desert Peak Architects as consultants. The drawing sets typically include the following:
- Civil Drawings
- Structural Drawings
- Architectural Drawings
- Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) Drawings
- Project Manual (Specifications)
Following the completion of the Construction Documents, a final opinion of probable cost can be developed.
Bidding and Negotiation
Once the Construction Documents are complete, Desert Peak Architects can assist you in acquiring Bids (Price Proposals) from contractors to begin the construction phase of the project. These services typically include the following:
- Recommendations for potential contractors
- Assistance in assembling instructions for bidders
- Bid proposal review and award recommendation
Construction Administration
Construction can often be stressful and full of surprises; Desert Peak Architects are experienced problem solvers prepared to find solutions to the most difficult problems during construction. We remain vigilant throughout the construction of your project, so you don’t have to!
