Silver City Food Co-Op Addition and Renovation
Design Start: Febuary 17, 2023
Construction Completion: TBD
Owner: Silver City Food Coop
Location: Silver City, New Mexico
Project Type: Commercial
Project Description:
The Silver City Food Co-Op project involved upgrading and expanding an existing building and its site at 907 N. Pope St., Silver City, New Mexico. The original office building was transformed into a lively grocery store.
Renovations: The building’s exterior, with its distinctive barrel roof and colorful art-deco style, was preserved and given a fresh stucco finish that matches the Co-Op’s branding. Inside, the space was gutted to showcase the barrel trusses in the main grocery area.
New Additions: An old metal building next to the main structure was renovated into office and storage space. Additionally, a new metal building was constructed nearby to house the Co-Op’s deli, meat prep, produce prep, juicing, and storage areas.
Floodplain Compliance: The existing main building was built below the floodplain. To meet current floodplain regulations the new addition had to be constructed above the floodplain level. Ramps were added inside to make it easy to move between the different levels and were strategically placed to optimize use of the space.
Site Updates: The site was updated with new landscaping and parking striping to improve the overall look and functionality.
The Silver City Food Co-Op project blends the building’s original charm with modern features, creating a welcoming and functional space for the community.
