Design Start: October 14, 2019

Construction Completion: July 16, 2022

Owner: Regents of New Mexico State University

Location: NMSU Main Campus, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Project Type: Commercial

Project Description:

The renovation of Chemistry Room 205 aimed at creating a modern, flexible learning environment. The previously dated classroom has been re-imagined to enhance both functionality and aesthetics, featuring smooth textured furring walls, sleek glass marker boards, and movable furniture that promotes collaborative and interactive learning.

To address the challenge of excessive outside noise disrupting classroom activities, Desert Peak Architects implemented specialized window shades with noise-reducing properties, significantly improving the acoustic comfort within the space. Additionally, blackout shades were installed to provide effective control over lighting, ensuring an optimal environment for various teaching methods.

Originally, the room’s ceiling served as a primary return space for the building’s ventilation system, and the project had been designed with an acoustical ceiling to conceal existing mechanical equipment. However, at the request of the users, the redesign removed the ceiling, enhancing the room’s spatial volume and overall modern feel. Desert Peak Architects collaborated closely with NMSU facilities to adjust the existing mixing box serving the space, allowing for increased conditioned air flow and improved climate control.

The renovation of Chemistry Room 205 not only revitalizes the physical space but also aligns with contemporary pedagogical approaches, supporting a dynamic learning atmosphere conducive to student engagement and success.
