PROJECT DIFFICULTIES / SOLUTIONS
Phase 1
The goal of Phase 1 of the Santa Teresa Hazmat Fire Station was to provide the County with a new Fire Station and Hazmat facility to address the needs of the growing Industrial Park at the airport. The project was designed to be expanded as the needs grew at the airport. The Phase 1 facility had one 85 foot long bay, turnout area, small kitchen and dining area, 3 offices that were later converted to dorm rooms in Phase 2, a large training/conference area, Airport Manager’s Office, locker rooms/restrooms and various storage areas.
Phase 2
Phase 2 of the project involved renovation of the existing offices in order to convert them to dorm rooms in an effort to make the facility a 24 hour manned station. The addition is approximately 2,300 sf and included a new Apparatus Bay, a new Airport Management Office, new staff offices, a new fitness room and a new day room. Electrical and flooring upgrades were added throughout. Modifications to the existing kitchen includes new casework and counter-top layouts with new sinks and plumbing for future refrigerators.
The construction for the project was delayed by the contractor due to unwillingness to complete the work. Desert Peak Architects acted as a mediator between the Owner and Contractor to ensure that the work was completed per the contract documents.
