Project Description

The Black Rat Tattoo project represents a visionary endeavor to relocate a beloved local tattoo parlor to the Town of Mesilla. After over a decade of operation, the owner approached Desert Peak Architects with an ambitious plan to create a pueblo-style facility on a small plot of land adjacent to Palacio’s Bar along Avenida de Mesilla. This new location would not only house the tattoo parlor but also feature an Air B&B rental space, merging artistic expression with hospitality.

Desert Peak Architects collaborated closely with the Town of Mesilla to ensure that the design harmonized with the unique character of the historic district. The design prominently features an inviting entry canopy constructed of natural wood latias, supported by wooden posts and accented with black steel corbels. This element creates a warm welcome and reflects the traditional craftsmanship of the region.

The building’s exterior walls incorporate curved and canted forms, echoing the soft, thick lines characteristic of adobe construction throughout Mesilla. Inside, the space is adorned with faux wooden beams on the ceiling and Saltillo Mexican tiles throughout the floors, contributing to the authentic pueblo aesthetic. The interior walls are finished with soft corners and a “Santa Fe” texture, further enhancing the cultural narrative and inviting atmosphere.

Construction of the tattoo parlor was successfully completed in 2020, providing a vibrant new home for the business. The owner is now looking forward to commencing construction on the residential portion of the project, which will complement the tattoo studio and offer a unique lodging experience in the heart of Mesilla. Overall, the Black Rat Tattoo project not only fulfills the owner’s dream but also enriches the community by adding to its distinctive architectural landscape.
